RECLAIM Thy Self Exhibition
Exhibition by Tarmi Clarke
In March of 2016 I held my exhibition entitled RECLAIM Thy Self, at the Portfolio gallery, and transformed the exhibition space into an immersive experience that invites the audience to experience and explore the beauty of decay, and natures ability to ‘RECLAIM’ the man made.
The opening night was a captivating symphony of music, art couture, design, textile installations and architecture, blurring the lines between what came first – man’s (or woman’s) ability to tame nature, or vice versa. Live acts on the night included a saxophonist, as well as a dynamic runway dance performance that allowed the audience to see the hidden textures of the art couture.
Thankyou!
Thanks to everyone who contributed big or small to help realise this exhibition and opening night! It was a real buzz and I couldn’t have hoped for a better night. The dance performance was truly captivating and exciting!
“I love abandoned buildings, I’m so curious as to what their story was and to see the transformation taking place as nature prys it way in.”

Socially conscious art and fashion has inspired me to be an up-cycle enthusiast, where I consider the environment by reducing the use of new raw materials, and using ‘waste’ instead. As a continuation of this philosophy, much of my art couture, and assemblage installations, are inspired by the fact that nature will ‘RECLAIM’ almost anything over time. Whether it be a shipwreck or an abandoned building, given the chance nature’s force will slowly take it over. It’s a unique juxtaposition of man and nature, using intuition to bring it all back together.
I like to look at things in a different way, creating conceptual art that is authentic and expressive at the same time. For this exhibition I have taken pre-loved clothing and fabric, and combined them with natural elements, such as a clusters of fabulously textured fungus flowers throwing out their spawn tassels sitting in small ledges, or rusted/paint peeling surfaces inspiring an almost tortured fabric .
Set in what appears to be an abandoned building, I created a unique blend of art meets nature meets fashion.
